Chris Evans: ‘Captain America’ Fight Scenes Are ‘Wildly Authentic’ Thanks to Frank Grillo

Chris Evans has already said in some interview, alongside Anthony Mackie, that Frank Grillo fights FOR REAL in the movie. In a recent interview, from the event of Captain America: The Winter Soldier in New York, March 31, they said more!

Though there are lots of nifty gadgets and large-scale battle scenes, the film hinges around one-on-one, hand-to-hand combat more than any other Marvel movie. And according to star Chris Evans, he and the cast were intent on making the fights feel grounded. One star in particular, Frank Grillo, who plays a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent determined to bring Captain America in, was eager to make the fights seem as real as possible. “Anytime you do a fight scene with Frank Grillo, you are going home with bumps, and bruises and injuries,” said Evans. “It’s supposed to be movie fights. It’s supposed to be stunt fights. I would watch it happen. The stuntman would say, ‘OK, let’s map it out. 50%, 50%!’”

“I’m not Captain America!” Grillo interrupted. “I have a lot to prove!”

“Frank doesn’t understand, Frank goes for it,” Evans continued. “But as a result, these fight sequences look wildly authentic.”

Although directors Anthony and Joe Russo have a background in comedy, Evans said they adapted well to the larger scale of the Marvel Universe. “They share a brain. There’s always an apprehension, understanding that there’s two directors you have to report to. But they never left each other’s side, and they really do share an understanding of what’s necessary, and as a result, I think you actually get a more complex understanding of what the scene requires, based on the pinball understanding between the two of them,” he said. “So even though on the surface it feels like this could be a handicap, it couldn’t have been more of a benefit.”

After the premiere, the cast and crew attended the after-party at Jimmy at the James Hotel, which featured appetizers and an open bar that served two specialty Marvel cocktails named “S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “The Black Widow.”
